Time out

At intervals in life it is important to do what Robert Frost described as ‘taking time out for re-assembly’. A visit to the country can often be nourishing to the spirit, for Nature is in itself deeply healing. Taking long walks and eating quietly on one’s own are also beneficial. It can help to make a note of whatever significant dreams occur during such a period of retreat (making sure to write them down at once before they vanish.) We must not try to solve them like crossword puzzles; but, rather, take them with us for long walks and reflect on what each is trying to tell, for such significant dreams come from a very deep part within us where all wisdom is stored. And for all couples occasional times of withdrawal can be crucially important. As Khalil Gibran wrote of marriage, ‘Let there be spaces in your togetherness.’

  1. I love this idea of walking along with our dreams. A country walk in the sunshine yesterday calmed my mind.
    Thankyou , as ever James

  2. Thank you, James. I can vouch for the simplicity of the long distance walk. Simply getting from A to B whilst immersing oneself in the landscape. Especially over several days. In my experience, this feeds and refreshes the soul.

  3. Thank you for this, dear James. We are just back from two weeks AWAY. Together, and yet on our own ‘trips’ too. Wee enjoyed family not seen for a long time, and time to sit and marvel at nature.
For me, time looking out to sea, simply engaging with the ebb and flow of tide was soothing, helpful. It seemed to invite me far deeper, beyond the time of ‘being there’, or what I was seeing, though all of that was special. Sitting with it was as if a connection with the Presence that simply is, was made. It involved no effort, only to say my own ‘yes’ to it. It was refreshing and remains with me still. A blessing of the reality of that Presence, to rejoice in as it accompanies us wherever we go.
    Much Love James,
    Diana
